So much disappointment in life is due to the realization that you didn’t have what you thought you had, or that what you thought was good turned out to be anything but. This type of suffering is completely due to ignorance of things as they really are.
It is possible to get to the point that you have winnowed all things in your life that can’t endure.
The Lord will teach us what is lasting and what is fleeting. His teachings establish us on a foundation of joy and happiness that can’t be shaken or removed:
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (Matthew 7)
One way he shows us the path to enduring happiness is by exposing us to the storms that reveal the failure points of what we currently possess or practice:
And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them. (Ether 12:27)
Only by understanding the limits of our current circumstances can we seek, apply, and appreciate something better.
