Do you really believe that God has all power? Or do you minimize his capabilities by what you are willing to believe is possible? What reason has he given you to limit him? The honest answer is that the source of the limits you place on him is to be found only in yourself.
Some people write off their low expectations by citing humility. Humility does not mean minimizing the value of what God has given you. In fact, it is impossible to be humble if you do not recognize and value the gifts and blessings God has given you because to do so would mean that you have those of yourself or that they are not really worth much. “And he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea, more.” (D&C 78:19)
Humility does not mean minimizing the value of what God is willing to give you. In fact, humility requires you to realize the true magnitude of what you lack—what God has that you do not. The more you think you have, the less you will get.
When you are humble, you have exceedingly high expectations, because you don’t limit what you can imagine to your own constraints. The Lord said: “...He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do....” (John 14:12) If you believe God has incredible things to give you, and that as he teaches you and blesses you, you will likewise do incredible things.
You must deeply believe that no matter what you presently have, there is something radically better beyond your awareness. Do you believe God possesses all things? Do you possess all things? If God possesses all things, and you do not, then in order to fulfill his promise of your becoming a joint heir with Christ and possessing all things he possesses, you will have to change.
Don’t be afraid to dream. If you limit your dreams, you will unavoidably limit your actions. Without great hope in the future, you won’t be willing to do what it takes to obtain the best life you could otherwise have.
Even your greatest dreams are less than what God desires to grant you. Think of the greatest outcomes you could ever imagine for yourself in life. Now, realize that if you seek God with all your might, mind, and strength, what he will lead you to is unequivocally better than that.
Paul said “...eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) Isaiah wrote: “For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.” (Isaiah 64:4)
We have been warned about “understand[ing] not the things which are prepared for [us].” (D&C 78:10) If you go with the current of society, you will be blind to what you could be experiencing, because you will be convinced that whatever you currently possess is all there is to have.
Do you believe that God has prepared things for you that exceed anything you’ve ever considered? If so, how do you think you will get them? They are “prepared.” They are “wait[ing]” for you. Recognize that something is being offered. It is already there.
We are ignorant of most of what God offers. The cure to this is to assume great things are always offered to us beyond what we recognize. This opens us to what we need to see. It is all already there, you just haven't claimed it. What are you doing about it?
The only reason you would act differently than you do now is if you thought there was a better way, far more available than you possess, or something far greater than you have already experienced. What is better is unlikely to seem that way from your present vantage point. That's why you don't have it already.
You can't have more joy without believing and acting differently than you do now. In order to live an abundant life, you must obtain something extraordinary. You don’t see miracles because you don’t go to where they are found. Nothing radically good ever happened to anyone unwilling to do radical things. In order to obtain that which is greater, you must be willing to do things that are different from what everyone else does:
Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend. (Mosiah 4:9)
Those with faith live a life filled with things that are difficult and unlikely. Their lives are an unbroken chain of long shots. In absolute terms, they have missed many more shots than normal people. But their success in life is not the ratio of wins to losses, which is much worse than normal peoples’, but rather the sum of their wins. People with faith fail more, but they are the only ones who ever bother trying what other people consider impossible. Because they try, they discover that many impossible things are only difficult. In trying what others dismiss as impossible, and by pushing past where others quit, they encounter experiences and outcomes that others never see.
God will give you far more and far better than you can imagine if you will trust in him and follow him with full purpose of heart.
