Your power to affect how you feel relies solely on your own choices, not the choices of others. Most of your emotions are a result of what you do. As you make better choices, maintain rational direction, and train your perception of yourself and the world, you will vastly improve your emotions.

As long as you let life control you, you will be miserable. Any happiness you feel will be fleeting, or it will be robbed from you later, and you'll end up worse off.

As long as you are alive, you have the ability to choose. Your mind is unassailably sovereign. You probably also have a lot more power over what happens to you than you would like to admit.

You can’t always choose what happens to you, but you always have the choice of what you will do about it. For example, if someone else hits you on the finger with a hammer, you will feel pain whether you like it or not. However, you have full control over how you respond to that signal. You get to choose whether to shout, shake your hand, dance around, retaliate, or laugh. As holds true in many cases, most of these options will share similar outcomes, but one has an outsized effect, for better or worse. In this case, retaliation could land you in jail and severely curtail your remaining opportunities in life.

What you get out of life will not be determined by your environment, but by what you do in spite of your environment. What you get out of life will not be determined by what happens to you, but by what you do in spite of what happens to you.

You are not an automaton. You should not act like one, you shouldn’t talk about yourself as if you were, and you shouldn’t allow others to, either. Every time someone does something that bothers you, ask: “What am I going to do about it?” If you have options, go with the best. If you can’t think of a way to improve the situation, let it go.
