Repentance frees you from the guilt caused by past mistakes. Repentance requires three actions:
- Confessing what you did or didn’t do.1
- Change so that it never happens again.2
- Doing everything you reasonably can to prevent others from making the same mistake.3
Part of repentance is boldly and unceasingly warning others not to repeat the mistakes we have made by teaching them the consequences of doing so. For example, the Lord told Ezekiel:
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. (Ezekiel 3:18)
He reiterated this to all his disciples in modern times:
60 Verily, verily, I say unto you who now hear my words, which are my voice, blessed are ye inasmuch as you receive these things;
61 For I will forgive you of your sins with this commandment—that you remain steadfast in your minds in solemnity and the spirit of prayer, in bearing testimony to all the world of those things which are communicated unto you.
62 Therefore, go ye into all the world; and unto whatsoever place ye cannot go ye shall send, that the testimony may go from you into all the world unto every creature. (D&C 84)
Many people avoid doing what they can to help others avoid the same mistakes they’ve made because they are afraid of losing a reputation that they do not deserve. This is dishonest, and in addition to the penalties of dishonesty, it precludes the freedom from guilt enjoyed by those who have met the requirements to have their past sins forgiven by God.
