How would you feel if you knew what God knew about you, reality, and your choices? Whether you come to see who you really are during this life or not, there will come a time after death when you will stand before God, and you will see more of what he sees in you.1 In that day, you will have a complete awareness of your life: everything you did and didn’t do, freed from all the excuses and delusion you used to hide from the truth during your life. In that day, you will be stripped naked of your excuses, and you will see yourself as you are seen by God: in truth. You will lack the ability to cover your failings, fears, unbelief, and selfishness with lies.2

Many rightly fear direct confrontation with God,3 but it is unwise to react to that fear by embracing the illusion that you can hide from him. It is in your best interest to find out how God sees you while you still have time to improve. For those who wait until after death to find out how God sees them, it will be too late to change how they are:4

32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.
34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. 35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked. (Alma 34)

To prepare for that day, you ought to do all things that lie in your power to:

  • See yourself as he does.
  • Value what he values.
  • See your potential as he does.
  • Attain your potential.

These actions, diligently performed, will make it so that when you see more of what God sees, it will increase your joy instead of filling you with horrible regret.
