Popular opinion and public persecution are effective filters on authentic behavior, but they are not measures of righteousness. All Christians ought to be “...perfectly honest and upright in all things....” (Alma 27:27) How many Christians are distinguishable from others in how honest and upright they are?

Most weigh their willingness to stand for what is right by how much it would cost them to support it. You ought to be who you really are and stand up for what you really believe no matter what it costs. The fact that this does not happen is further evidence that beliefs tend to not be based on reason. If you only believed what provided the highest net benefit, you would never set aside your beliefs because of their cost. Only beliefs held by convenience will be set aside for convenience.
