Only ask God for what you truly want. Hiding your desires from God will only make it that much harder for him to bless you. The Lord said his ability to help us is limited by our willingness to be honest about what we really want:
6 For behold, God hath said...if [a man] offereth a gift, or prayeth unto God, except he shall do it with real intent it profiteth him nothing.
9 [It is] counted evil unto a man, if he shall pray and not with real intent of heart; yea, and it profiteth him nothing, for God receiveth none such. (Moroni 7)
Pretending you desire something better than you do shows contempt for God,1 who sees all things, and shows an immense lack of trust in him.
